Castellaccio, Montalone
-
17 Km totali.
-
Duration approx 2 - 3 hrs
Route very demanding because of the stiff uphill climb on
tract F, but worth while for the scenery and nature. In
spring there is literally an explosion of flowers, even
rare types of wild orchids that are very colourful
traversable in any weather.

F
(10 Km)
from Pieve Santo Stefano along the state road you will find
indications for the Forestry Institute (Istituto Forestale
anyone will be able to point you in the right direction).
From the deviation to the institute the road starts to climb
immediately on an asphalt surface. After less than one
kilometre you will find two roads opposite and the road
continues to climb. On the right is the Forestry Institute
but your road is the dirt road on the left. After a while
the incline becomes demanding and continues to become more
rigorous, with briefly flat tracts. You will pass trough
woods and traverse ridges and few pass by this mountain .
The slopes on brief tracts can reach the inclination of 18%.
After a very hard tract over stony ground you will reach the
top of Monte Castelluccio which you will recognise as here
there is a plateau like point (at approx 1000 mt.ms.l.m.) in
the middle of the a pine wood in front of which starts the
descent wile to the right starts a path way, in the midst of
the woods, marked by the colours red-white-red and the
number 075 ( you could try this pathway which leads to the
top of the "Passo delle Pratelle", but I have never tried
it. they say that it is very beautiful) . Continuing along
our path way we will start downhill along the side of the
mountain. At the start the descent is not much as it is a
false plain, but after a while the slope begins to be more
decisive and surrounded by a lovely landscape. After a few
curves we will arrive at the village of Montalone, where
begins the tarred road. Once arrived at the main road which
connects Pieve Santo Stefano to La Verna, you should turn
left, downhill.

A
(7 Km)
from Montalone along the state road downhill for 7 km, the
road is perfectly tarred and though there is traffic,
perfectly secure. Following this road you will arrive as
Pieve Santo Stefano which is the end of this route.
